Introduction

(a). Best piece of creative work

This piece of ink work is a scanned version of one of my Visual Arts major works produced in the last year of high school, titled "City Chronicle". It measures 0.29 x 2.6 metres and was displayed as a concluding artwork to my exhibition which explored the relationship between places & spaces, and how these construct a sense of identity. The panel projects place and space on a spectrum, integrating the world as we know it, that is realistic and logical, to a world that is constantly shifting. It begins with my interpretation of the urban landscape in rigid and geometric forms, shifting to a map representing the human analytical representation of places. Subsequently, the two koi fishes symbolic of my Chinese heritage serve to depict the interaction between the natural landscape on its' right with the urban landscape. Hence, this artwork ultimately reflects the natural and cultural significances embedded in the places we inhabit.

(b). A great piece of architecture

This is the Sagrada Familia, a basilica designed by Antoni Gaudi located in Barcelona. I had the wonderful opportunity to visit this architectural masterpiece during the summer holidays and needless to say, it was simply breathtaking and exceeded all my expectations. Its revolutionary structure subverts the conventional design of a church, with biblical stories depicted within its' multifaceted facades where each of its 3 facades depicting a phase in the life of Jesus: nativity, passion and glory. The endless natural symbolism within its interior skeletal structure had large pillars resembling sprouting tree branches, with details attended to with meticulous care and incredible intricacy. Gaudi analyzed nature and geothermal formations to see how they naturally supported shapes and weight, for example examining the orbit of stars to design the helicoidal columns. It seemed that every component had been planned and thought out with desire and detail, which is what makes this establishment so remarkable and captivating. La Sagrada Familia has been under construction for over a century, with the project beginning in 1882 and is due for completion in 2026.

(c). Something beautiful
This is an image captured of an architectural monument is the Dom zu Salzburg, a cathedral located in Salzburg, Austria. I adore this image because of my love the Baroque era – and this cathedral in particular exhibits some of its characteristics through its grandeur and dramatic composition. Its richly sculpted surfaces are accentuated by the embellishment of classical European art portraying biblical references. Its extravagance and beauty are highlighted even more so with the tranquil ambience and heavenly choir voices upon entering, transporting individuals from the lively markets outside to what seems to be another realm. With the vast windows shedding an abundance of light which in effect amplifies the heavenly and divine surrounding in this holy vicinity, this picture captures the cathedral as a single entity.
